Access to PMTCT: a key means of protecting mother and children from HIV

 

"We are very happy and honored to have PMTCT and HTC services in our PHC. We are and will be committed to provide services to target people from our service center as the minimum requirement has been fulfilled. With glad, I request NCASC to continue for the logistic support and train health personnel as per need in future. Thank you very much NCASC" – this was the remark by Dr. Rohini Sigdel, Sishuwa PHC in charge amidst the establishing meeting of PMTCT and HTC services in Sishuwa PHC of Kaski district.

National Centre of AIDS and STD Control (NCASC), Ministry of Health and Population has been escalating HIV related services to PHC level of Nepal to operationalize National HIV/AIDS strategy (2011-2016). 12 HIV testing and counseling centers (HTC), 5 Antiretroviral Therapy centers (ART) and 25 Prevention of Mother to Child transmission (PMTCT) was planned to establish in this fiscal year 2069/70.

The program was participated by NCASC Director, Senior Integrated Medical Officers, Senior Public Health Officer, Public Health Officer, chairperson and members of PHC management committee,  Kaski DPHO, HIV focal person, DACC Coordinator and Sishuwas PHC staffs. "Kaski DPHO has been requesting NCASC to establish PMTCT and HTC centers in two PHCs since last year. At last, we got the programs. We are happy. I especially, from the DPHO, will support to continue this service and I request PHC staff not to take this as additional services and extra work load but as opportunity to serve community. I thank NCASC Director and team who came all the way here and supported to establish needed services in this PHC" – remarked Mr. Ramesh Prasad Adhiakari, Kaski DPHO.

NCASC Director handed over PMTCT drugs; HIV tests KITs and other required materials to the PHC in charge. Program Associate briefed about the PMTCT and HTC focusing on minimum requirement of service establishment, implementation process, program and budget provision and supply chain management from NCASC. M&E Associate briefed about recording and reporting tools followed by orientation of completing that tools to staffs of PHC involved in PMTCT and HTC services.

"Time has come to work more vigorously to stop HIV transmission from one generation to next. We request PHC staffs to serve as much as they can and NCASC are for the back up support. FCHV training has been planned and going to be rolled out within this month. We are committed to provide other support as per need in future. Please don't hesitate to inform us for any support to run the program smoothly. Report the program progress update and logistic status in time so that we could supply drugs within time frame. We congrats and thanks DPHO and PHC staffs for their support and acceptance to implement Nepal Government Plan"- addressed Dr. Bal Krishna Suvedi to the meeting.
